Update: COVID-19 Vaccine Candidates and Abortion-Derived Cell Lines

Accurate information about the development and production of COVID-19 vaccines is essential, especially because many proposed candidates use newer molecular technologies for production of a viral vaccine.  One concern regarding the ethical assessment of viral vaccine candidates is the potential use of abortion-derived cell lines in the development, production or testing of a vaccine.  This analysis utilizes data from the primary scientific literature when available, along with data from clinical trial documents, reputable vaccine tracking websites, and published commercial information.1  It is the hope that by providing accurate data, recipients can make well-informed decisions regarding vaccine choices.

Abortion Reporting: South Dakota (2019)

South Dakota’s provisional 2019 abortion report was published by the South Dakota Department of Health in June 2020, and the final report was released in September. The final report shows that chemical abortions in South Dakota remain low.

Ahead of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the Guttmacher Institute, CLI has the first analysis of trends revealed by the latest available state abortion reports from calendar year 2018

New Abortion Trends in the United States: A First Look

To allow for a preliminary view of the current state of abortion in the U.S., the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) reviewed all available state reports for 2017 and 2018. As of July 2020, 38 states had released 2018 abortion statistics. CLI’s preliminary review of 2017 state abortion reporting, published in May 2019, suggested that the long-term decline in abortions in the United States may be slowing. This preliminary review of 2018 state data indicates that the decline may have been interrupted.

North Dakota’s abortion report for 2019 was published in June 2020. There were 20 fewer abortions in 2019 than in 2018.

South Carolina 2019 abortion statistics compiled by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control show that abortions increased from the previous year but remain low compared to earlier years.

Abortion Reporting: Arkansas (2019)

Arkansas’ 2019 abortion report was published by the Arkansas Department of Health in June 2020. The report shows that abortions declined from 2018.
