Overlooked Dangers of Mifepristone, the FDA’s Reduced REMS, and Self-Managed Abortion Policies: Unwanted Abortions, Unnecessary Abortions, Unsafe Abortions

The failure of abortion providers to support and undertake prospective longitudinal studies of a nationally representative sample of women contributes to our belief that the ideological biases of abortion providers have led to a combination of disinterest, willful ignorance, or even a conspiracy to hide the widespread dangers of unwanted and contraindicated abortions.

New Abortion Trends in the United States: A First Look

To allow for a preliminary view of the current state of abortion in the U.S., the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) reviewed all available state reports for 2017 and 2018. As of July 2020, 38 states had released 2018 abortion statistics. CLI’s preliminary review of 2017 state abortion reporting, published in May 2019, suggested that the long-term decline in abortions in the United States may be slowing. This preliminary review of 2018 state data indicates that the decline may have been interrupted.

Abortion Reporting: Nevada (2018)

In 2018, 8,819 abortions were reported in Nevada. This was an increase of 20 percent from 2017, when 7,360 abortions were reported in the state (Fig. 1). There were 8,329 abortions performed on Nevada residents, up 20 percent from 6,936 the previous year. Of these, 2,521 were chemical abortions, an increase of 43 percent from 2017. Thirty percent of the abortions performed on Nevada residents in 2018 were chemical abortions. The Charlotte Lozier Institute estimates that Nevada’s abortion rate increased from 12.6 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age in 2017 to 14.8 in 2018, higher than the national average (Fig. 2).
