Fact Sheet: Planned Parenthood’s 2023-24 Annual Report

Editor’s Note: The graph included in this fact sheet was updated on 5/14/25.

Abortions and Non-Abortion Services: Changes from Last Year and Long-Term Trends

  • Planned Parenthood’s service data lags behind the rest of the information in the report – the 2023-24 report[1] contains information on services provided in 2022-2023.
  • Planned Parenthood performed a record 402,230 abortions[2] in 2022-23 – an increase of over 9,500 (2%) from the previous year, and an increase of 23%[3] since 2013.
  • The number of patients[4] increased by just 1% from the previous year and was down by 23% from 2013.
  • In 2022-23, 96.9% of the time, women seeking help related to their pregnancy at Planned Parenthood were sold an abortion rather than given prenatal care, provided care for a miscarriage, or helped to make an adoption plan. Prenatal services, miscarriage care, and adoption referrals accounted for only 1.7% (7,008), 0.9% (3,598), and 0.5% (2,148), respectively.[5]
  • For every adoption referral in 2022-23, Planned Parenthood performed 187 abortions.[6] Over the past 10 annual reports, the ratio was approximately 136 abortions for every one adoption referral.[7]
  • According to data from Planned Parenthood’s own annual reports,[8] since 2013:
    • Total services are down more than 10%.
    • With changing practice guidelines,[9] total cancer screening and prevention services have dropped by 54%, including declines of 61% for breast exams and 54% for pap tests.
    • Prenatal services are down 63%.
    • Contraceptive services are down 38%.

Planned Parenthood’s Financials

  • In its 2023-24 annual report, Planned Parenthood reported over $2 billion in income[10] and over $2.5 billion in net assets.[11]
    • $684.1 million came from private contributions, down 31% from the previous report.[12]
    • Taxpayer funding is reported by Planned Parenthood’s affiliates, whose information lags behind the national office and covers fiscal years ending in 2023. [13]
    • Taxpayer funding in the form of government grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements hit $792.2 million, over $2 million per day[14] – an increase of $92.9 million from the previous report and representing 39% of Planned Parenthood’s overall revenue.[15]
    • Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding has increased by 50% since 2013.[16]
    • Planned Parenthood’s excess of total revenue over total expenses is $27.4 million.[17] Last year Planned Parenthood reported an excess of total revenue over total expenses of $178.6 million.[18]

*The years on the graph denote the fiscal years that Planned Parenthood’s annual reports cover. As noted on pages 1 and 2, the service data and government funding data in those annual reports contain information on services provided for the prior year.
