In the fourth week, the embryonic heart starts beating. The neural tube, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, forms. At this point, a woman has likely only been aware of her pregnancy for one week.

In the seventh week after conception, networks of neurons produce brain waves that have been recorded as early as 6 ½ weeks after conception. The embryo spontaneously moves his arms, hands, and legs, and may even hiccup. The embryo’s heart now has all four chambers.

By the seventeenth and eighteenth week after gestation, the fetus shows a clear response to pain in multiple studies, and at least one brain pathway is mature enough to create a perception of pain. Kathryn Nix Carnahan, M.D.

Kathryn Nix Carnahan, M.D., received her Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2009. She then went on to work as a research assistant and then health policy analyst for the Heritage Foundation from 2009 through 2012. In 2016, she received her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. She completed her residency obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and now works as a general obstetrician-gynecologist in Milwaukee, WI. She served on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs from 2018 to 2020.
