Meeting the Needs of Families in the Dobbs Era
Washington, D.C. – Today Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), the research arm of SBA Pro-Life America and America’s premier scientific institute on life issues, released the findings of a robust survey of 2,750 pregnancy centers in the United States to calculate their extraordinary services, material support and health care contributions to women and families across the country since the landmark Supreme Court Dobbs decision that took down Roe v. Wade.
As preliminary CDC data suggests 32,000 more babies are born annually, news reports document both the increase in demand for pregnancy services and accelerating growth of the pro-life safety net to meet those needs.
The 2022 report, Hope for a New Generation, is a collaboration of national survey data provided by the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), Care Net, Heartbeat International, and National Institute of Family and Life Advocates. Prepared by CLI Associate Scholar Moira Gaul and CLI Senior Associate Scholar Michael J. New, the report documents how pregnancy help centers have identified and responded to an array of challenges through their many services that promote maternal, child and family health and well-being.
Key findings in the new report include:
- In 2022, pregnancy centers met with clients over 16 million times, both in person and virtually, with an estimated total service value of at least $358 million annually.
- Pregnancy centers provided services to almost 975,000 new clients.
- Vital services provided at no cost: pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, parenting education programs, baby diapers, wipes, formula, outfits and more.
Of the over 16 million client sessions that took place, 97% self-reported a positive experience. These numbers speak to why 91% of Americans support pregnancy centers, according to a 2023 Knights of Columbus–Marist Poll.
Chuck Donovan, president of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, said:
“In the Dobbs era, the demands upon pregnancy help centers have increased daily. Many states are responding with new funds and new policies to support the centers’ work. At the same time, new attacks are launched daily by violent radicals and by politicians who should know better. Some would find these challenges daunting, but as our report shows, pregnancy help center leaders see in this situation new opportunities to serve generously with love and compassion for those in need.”
Charlotte Lozier Institute was launched in 2011 as the education and research arm of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. CLI is a hub for research and public policy analysis on some of the most pressing issues facing the United States and nations around the world. The Institute is named for a feminist physician known for her commitment to the sanctity of human life and equal career and educational opportunities for women.
