Brian Baugus, Ph.D., M.A., M.B.A.

Associate Scholar

Professor Brian Baugus is an associate professor of economics at Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA.  

He mostly grew up on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from McDaniel College. He went on to earn his M.B.A. in finance from Vanderbilt University. He worked in consulting, ran his own business and served as a senior budget analyst for the Maryland State Legislature. At that time, he returned to school and earned his masters and doctorate in economics from George Mason University. He has taught at several schools in Maryland, Virginia and Tennessee and has been at Regent since 2012. 

His research interests focus primarily on political economy and public choice, and development and entrepreneurship. He sees the foundation of both good policy and economic growth as having a proper understanding and respect for the human person. Professor Baugus is the author or co-author of a dozen academic articles, several popular press articles and two books.  

He also co-created and administers an entrepreneurship training program being used in several developing nations, is the Academic Advisor to the African Business Institute and regularly travels to various countries in Africa to lecture and teach. 

He is married and has four children.
