Abortion Reporting: California

First published: October 16, 2019. Last updated: May 24, 2023

California does not collect or report abortion data.

The Centers for Disease Control’s 1997 abortion surveillance report was the last to include California data. In response to an inquiry from the Charlotte Lozier Institute in October 2019, the California Department of Public Health informed CLI that “California does not collect information on induced termination of pregnancy.”

Other Available Information

In 2014, California state Medicaid funded approximately 83,485 abortions. More information is available here.

The Guttmacher Institute estimates that 154,060 abortions were performed in California in 2020.

This page was corrected to state that the 1997 CDC abortion surveillance report was the last to include California.
