CLI President: Reckless Bill Was a Threat to Women’s Health, Safety, and Dignity and an Offense to Taxpayers

Washington, D.C.
  – In response to news that California Governor Jerry Brown (D) has vetoed S.B. 320, legislation that would force campus health centers at state universities to dispense abortion-inducing drugs, Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), the research and education arm of Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List), released the following statement:

“This reckless push to turn college campuses into dispensaries for dangerous abortion drugs was a bridge too far even for pro-abortion Governor Jerry Brown. He was right to veto it,” said Charlotte Lozier Institute President Chuck Donovan. “With its public support declining, the abortion industry – under the guise of ‘convenience’ – seeks to expand abortion into family homes, apartments, and dorm rooms, where a woman may endure painful, harrowing, potentially life-threatening complications without anyone present to help her. Not only that, she becomes a direct witness to the lost life of her child. No woman deserves to suffer such a trauma and indignity, especially at the hands of those entrusted with her care and education.

“The bill Governor Brown vetoed was not merely needless, it was a threat to women’s health and safety and an offense to taxpayers who subsidize the public university system. It’s encouraging that even in one of the nation’s most extreme pro-abortion states, common sense can prevail over the human indifference of the abortion lobby.”

CLI Associate Scholar Dr. Donna Harrison, executive director of the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, has previously stated:

“It is a fantasy that the abortion drug is safe…Mifeprex has four times more complications than surgical abortion. Roughly one out of every twenty women end up in the emergency room or require surgery to complete the failed abortion, and these rates increase the further along in pregnancy that the abortion takes place.”

Charlotte Lozier Institute was launched in 2011 as the education and research arm of Susan B. Anthony List. CLI is a hub for research and public policy analysis on some of the most pressing issues facing the United States and nations around the world. The Institute is named for a feminist physician known for her commitment to the sanctity of human life and equal career and educational opportunities for women.
