Of 193 U.N. countries, the United States is one of eight countries that allows, at the federal level, abortion on demand without any gestational limits along with Australia, Canada, China, Guinea-Bissau, Mexico, South Korea, and Vietnam.

All pro-life state laws allow doctors to exercise their reasonable medical judgment to treat women with pregnancy emergencies, and no law requires certainty or imminence before a doctor can act. Doctors and hospitals who fail to provide patients with necessary treatment in emergency circumstances may be committing malpractice.

Even after nearly half the states passed laws to protect life at different points in pregnancy, abortions increased in 2023, demonstrating the need for federal protections.

The most permissive, no-limits states all have abortion shield laws that protect abortionists who violate pro-life states’ laws from legal action.

As of June 2023, the Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer funding of elective abortion, has saved 2,566,968 lives since its enactment in 1976.
