Indiana Abortions Rise in 2018
Both Total Abortions and Chemical Abortions Up in Latest State Report
Washington, D.C. –A new analysis of Indiana abortion data conducted by Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), the research and education arm of Susan B. Anthony List, shows that total abortions and the abortion rate in Indiana increased for the second year in a row, reversing its long-term decline.
“Indiana’s annual abortion reports are a valuable tool to citizens and lawmakers. As one of just a few states to report the number of abortions performed by each abortion facility, Indiana gives citizens the ability to track the impact of abortion center openings and closures in their state, including the centers run by notorious abortionist Ulrich Klopfer,” said Tessa Longbons, CLI Research Associate, “Indiana’s abortion reporting system serves as a good model for other states to follow.”
Ms. Longbons analyzed 2018 abortion data from the Indiana State Department of Health. Key highlights from her report summarizing Indiana data include:
- There were 8,037 abortions reported in Indiana in 2018, up three percent from the previous year.
- Chemical abortions jumped by 17 percent, rising from 2,806 in 2017 to 3,296 in 2018 – the highest it’s ever been in the state. Since Indiana first reported chemical abortions as a separate category in 2004, chemical abortions have increased by over 700 percent.
- Planned Parenthood performs more than 69 percent of the abortions in the State of Indiana.

Abortion in Indiana received national attention in September with the horrific discovery of 2,246 bodies of medically preserved aborted babies at the home of infamous abortionist Ulrich Klopfer. Just last week, more grisly news broke that more bodies were found in the trunk of a car on one of the late abortionist’s Illinois properties.
Ms. Longbons is CLI’s Research Associate and the author of Abortion in the United States 2017: A Preliminary Call to Reform, a comprehensive report looking at abortion data across the U.S. In addition to this report on Indiana, she has compiled individual abortion reports for 41 states and New York City, which are available online here. She is available for media interviews.
