In the fourth week, the embryonic heart starts beating. The neural tube, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, forms. At this point, a woman has likely only been aware of her pregnancy for one week.

In the seventh week after conception, networks of neurons produce brain waves that have been recorded as early as 6 ½ weeks after conception. The embryo spontaneously moves his arms, hands, and legs, and may even hiccup. The embryo’s heart now has all four chambers.

By the seventeenth and eighteenth week after gestation, the fetus shows a clear response to pain in multiple studies, and at least one brain pathway is mature enough to create a perception of pain. The fetus also practices breathing, crying, and breastfeeding in the womb. The fetal heart has beat over 20 million times and circulates about 55 quarts of blood per day.

Tara Sander Lee, Ph.D., is a guest contributor for the Charlotte Lozier Institute.

A scientist with over 20 years’ experience in academic and clinical medicine with an emphasis on the cause of pediatric disease, Dr. Sander Lee earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Medical College of Wisconsin followed by postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital in molecular and cell biology.  Dr. Sander Lee was an appointed faculty member at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where she directed a research laboratory investigating congenital heart disease in children and served as Scientific Director of Molecular Diagnostics at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.  She has also served as a scientific consultant and is currently a member of the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Infant and Maternal Mortality.

Dr. Sander Lee is dedicated to promoting ethical advancements in healthcare that protect the sanctity of every human life.  She has been invited to give expert legislative testimony, given numerous national media interviews, and provided scientific advice for legislators, policymakers, and organizations.  Dr. Sander Lee is published in various medical journals and textbooks, including her most recent contribution to the book, Choose Life:  Answering Key Claims of Abortion Defenders with Compassion.  She is also lead editor of VoyageOfLife.com, a website that reveals the remarkable journey of every human being in the womb from conception to birth, and how we are each “fearfully and wonderfully” made.

Saving Babies, One Surgery at a Time

Recently, more news articles are reporting how mothers in the United Kingdom have undergone groundbreaking fetal surgery while pregnant to repair defects in their babies before birth. The common thread in all these stories is that these babies were diagnosed prenatally with spina bifida, a severe congenital disorder in which the spinal column does not close properly during development, also known as a neural tube defect.

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, the U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee on Healthcare, Benefits, and Administrative Rules and Government Operations for the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing on "Exploring Alternatives to Fetal Tissue Research." The hearing was called as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services re-evaluates funding for research using tissue from aborted babies. Charlotte Lozier Institute Associate Scholar Tara Sander Lee, Ph.D., submitted the following written testimony in support of using ethical alternatives to aborted fetal tissue research.

Minnesota Court Rules in Favor of University’s Use of Aborted Fetal Tissue for Research

There is a great need within the scientific community for transparency, movement away from the gruesome practice of using aborted baby parts for research, and movement toward more advanced and ethical science that is leading to real cures.

Written Testimony of Tara Sander Lee, Ph.D., in Support of Texas Bill to Prohibit Human Fetal Tissue Research

On Wednesday, February 15, 2017, the Texas Committee of Health and Human Services held a hearing regarding Texas Senate Bill 8 (SB 8). SB 8 prohibits partial-birth abortions, prohibits donation of human fetal tissue except by certain authorized facilities to accredited universities, and prohibits the purchase or sale of human fetal tissue.
