Abortion Reporting: Nevada (2023)
Nevada’s 2023 abortion statistics were provided to the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services upon request. The report shows that total abortions as well as drug-induced abortions increased significantly from 2022. The data published by the state does not include the total number of abortions obtained by Nevada residents out of state or the number of self-managed abortions on women outside of the healthcare system. It is also unlikely that the report contains the total number of mail-order abortion drugs obtained by Nevada residents prescribed by licensed abortion providers in other states. In a separate section, CLI will describe data provided by the Guttmacher Institute’s Monthly Abortion Provision Study that details the number of women who traveled to Nevada to obtain abortions and their states of residence, as well as the number of abortions obtained by Nevada women in other states. Guttmacher’s abortion estimates include the number of abortions obtained at brick-and-mortar facilities and those provided via telehealth and virtual providers in the United States.
Statistics and Changes in Nevada Abortions, 2022-2023
Planned Parenthood’s market share includes abortions performed by brick-and-mortar locations in the state and telemedicine abortions performed by Planned Parenthood of Southern Nevada.
Abortion Totals and Trends
In 2023, there were 13,904 abortions reported in Nevada, an increase of 16% from the previous year. There were 11,936 abortions performed in Nevada on state residents, 17% more than the total performed on state residents in 2022. More than half (55%) of the abortions performed in Nevada were drug-induced (7,629), with the total number of those occurring in the state increasing by 28% from the previous year (Fig. 1). CLI estimates that Nevada’s 2023 abortion rate was 22.3 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age (Fig. 2).1 As of February 2025, 28 states have released 2023 abortion statistics, with 15 states reporting that abortions have increased.
State Report Summary
Eighty-six percent of the abortions reported in Nevada in 2023 were performed on state residents. Thirteen percent, or 1,795, of the abortions reported in Nevada were performed on nonresidents, an increase of 16% from 2022 and an increase of 229% from 2021. One possible explanation for this increase is that after Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022 some of the states that border Nevada had different gestational laws that went into effect, such as Idaho’s life at conception law, Utah’s 18 week limit, and Arizona’s 15- week limit. However, in Nevada, abortion remains largely unrestricted because of broad exceptions to the state’s 24-week limit, making the state a hub for interstate abortion commerce. One percent of abortions were performed on women of unknown residence status.
Forty-seven percent of abortions were obtained by women in their twenties, with 23% on women ages 20 to 24 and 24% on women ages 25 to 29. Twenty-seven percent were performed on women in their thirties, and 4% were performed on women in their forties or older. Seven percent of the abortions were performed on girls ages 19 and younger, including 2% on girls under the age of 18. The youngest girl to get an abortion was 13, and the oldest woman was 49. Age was not reported for 15% of Nevada abortions.
Six percent of Nevada abortions were performed on women with less than a high school education, and 39% were performed on women with a high school diploma or GED. Seventeen percent were performed on women who had attended some college but did not obtain a degree. Ten percent of Nevada abortions were performed on women with a college degree, and 28% on women whose level of education was not reported.
Eleven percent of the abortions were reported to have been performed on married women, and 71% were performed on unmarried women. Eighteen percent of the abortions that occurred in Nevada were performed on women whose marital status was not reported. Thirty-eight percent of the abortions were performed on women with no living children, while 19% were performed on women with one child and 29% on women with two or more children. The number of living children was not reported for 14% of the abortions that occurred in Nevada.
In 2023, 22% of the abortions performed in Nevada were suction curettage procedures. Fifty-five percent were drug-induced abortions, and 3% were conducted via dilation and evacuation. Sharp curettage abortions made up 7% of the total abortions. Thirteen percent of the abortions were performed using an unknown method.
Two percent of abortions were reported between one and four weeks of gestation. Thirty-seven percent occurred between five and six weeks of gestation, and 25% were reported between seven and eight weeks. Eleven percent were performed between nine and 10 weeks of gestation, while 4% occurred between 11 and 12 weeks and another 4% between 13 and 15 weeks of gestation. Two percent of the abortions were performed between 16 and 19 weeks, and 1% at 20 weeks of gestation or later. The latest reported abortion was performed at 24 weeks of gestation. Gestational age was not reported for 14% of the abortions performed in the state. The number of abortions obtained in the state between one and six weeks of gestation increased by 30% from 2022 to 2023. The number of abortions performed at seven weeks of gestation or later decreased by 12% from 2022.
Fourteen of Nevada’s 17 counties had residents who obtained abortions in the state in 2023. Of those 14 counties, the top three by number of abortions obtained by county residents include:
- Clark County – 10,687 abortions
- Washoe County – 826 abortions
- Nye County – 95 abortions
Abortion Centers in Nevada
Twenty-eight percent of Nevada abortions were performed by Planned Parenthood, an increase from 17% in 2022. The number of abortions performed by brick-and-mortar Planned Parenthood locations in the state increased by 94% from 2022 to 2023. Eighteen percent of Nevada’s abortions were performed by Planned Parenthood’s West Charleston center and 10% by the East Flamingo location. Less than 1% were performed via telemedicine by Planned Parenthood of Southern Nevada. Fifty-nine percent of the abortions were performed by independent centers in 2023, compared to 76% in 2022. Nineteen percent of the abortions were performed by Birth Control Care Center, and 17% by A-Z Women’s Center, which has been renamed Lilith Clinic. Ten percent occurred at Safe and Sound for Women and 6% each occurred at West End Women’s Medical Group (which has since closed) and Women to Women Gynecology. Desert Inn Medical Center reported 2% of the abortions.
Two non-Planned Parenthood telemedicine abortion companies performed 1,782 drug-induced abortions (13%) in the state in 2023, an increase of 101% from 2022. One percent of abortions were performed by IGH PLLC, which does business under the name Abortion on Demand, and 12% by Carafem Telehealth. This was the state’s third annual report to include data about telemedicine abortion centers.
Guttmacher Data2
In 2023, Guttmacher estimated that 16,870 abortions occurred in Nevada while the state reported 13,904 occurred in the state. Guttmacher also estimated that 2,580 abortions were obtained by women who traveled to Nevada to get an abortion in 2023 while the state reported that 1,795 women traveled to the state to get an abortion. The 2,580 abortions are included within Guttmacher’s total estimate of 16,870 abortions occurring in the state. To see the number of abortions obtained in Nevada by women from various states, see the following table:
States of Residence for Women Who Traveled to Nevada | # of Abortions Obtained by Non-Resident Women in Nevada, 2023 |
Arizona | 1,170 |
Texas | 930 |
Utah | 250 |
California | 230 |
Total | 2,580 |
Lastly, Guttmacher estimated the number of abortions obtained by Nevada residents who traveled to other states to obtain an abortion. To see the number of abortions obtained by Nevada women in various states, see the following table:

State Ranking
In 2024, CLI published a paper reevaluating abortion reporting across the country, with Nevada tied for 23rd place. Nevada could improve its reporting and increase transparency by publishing its reports online and working to decrease the number of unknown abortions for certain data points reported by the state. Nevada could also collect and report data on complications caused by abortion.
- National rates were calculated by the Guttmacher Institute. Nevada rates were calculated by CLI using the following formula: (total number of abortions performed in Nevada ÷ number of resident women ages 15-44 [based on most recent population estimates]) x 1,000. Rates may differ slightly from previous CLI articles due to revised population estimates. Population estimates were obtained from the CDC WONDER database. Estimates for 2005-2009 are intercensal estimates of the July 1 resident population. Estimates for 2010-2019 are Vintage 2020 postcensal estimates of the July 1 resident population. Estimates for 2020-2022 are Vintage 2022 postcensal estimates of the July 1 resident population. Estimates were produced by the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Health Statistics. Rates for 2023 were calculated using the Vintage 2022 postcensal estimates because 2023 population estimates have not yet been released by the CDC.
- The Guttmacher Institute notes that their monthly abortion totals by states are estimates and that each state’s estimate is within a range of uncertainty. Guttmacher also notes that their estimates do not reflect self-managed abortions or those obtained by women in pro-life states under shield laws.
- Abortion occurrence totals were obtained from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services upon request. Drug-induced abortion totals were obtained from the CDC. 2010 was the first year of drug-induced abortion data that Nevada reported to the CDC. Nevada later revised its 2016 abortion total after data was submitted to the CDC. Consequently, the 2016 abortion total Nevada shared with CLI (8,069 abortions) was far higher than that reported to the CDC (7,284), so CDC’s 2016 Nevada drug-induced abortion total is not included in this graph.
