Abortion Drugs

Drug-induced abortions made up 63% of all U.S. abortions in 2023, but this percentage is an undercount since it does not include abortions outside the formal health care system, or those done under shield laws. Furthermore, there have been reports of abortion drug stockpiling, and no one can know for sure where these drugs ultimately end up.

Drug-induced abortions miscoded as natural miscarriages accounted for 60% of abortion drug-related ER visits in 2015.

Drug-induced abortion has a complication rate four times that of surgical abortion, and as many as one in five women will suffer a complication.

Without in-person medical supervision, mail-order abortions place women and girls at risk, since there is no opportunity to screen for coercion, miscalculated gestational ages, sex-trafficking, and checking for the presence of IUDs and ectopic pregnancies.

A CLI study found that 86% of women whose drug-induced abortions were miscoded as a natural miscarriage needed surgery to remove the unborn baby and/or pregnancy tissue.
