Parental Involvement Laws Decrease Teen Suicide Rate

Dr. Michael New, adjunct scholar at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, writes on National Review Online of a new study by Sabia and Reese which shows that parental involvement laws for abortion reduce the suicide rates among teenage girls.  The teen suicide rate for teenage girls stands at roughly 5 per 100,000, according to the Center for Disease Control’s most recent numbers.  However, the implementation of parental involvement laws has been shown to decrease the suicide rate by anywhere from 11 to 21 percent.  The study, published by Economic Inquiry, also shows that the reduction in the suicide rate for teenage girls in a parental-involvement state is less significant when their neighboring states do not have  parental involvement laws.
