There were 4,058 abortions reported in Iowa in 2020, up 14 percent from 2019. Chemical abortions jumped by 34 percent, making up 79 percent of the total in 2020, up from 67 percent in 2019.

U.S. Abortion Trends: 2019 and Preliminary 2020

As of September 1, 2021, there were 39 states that had released abortion statistics for 2019. Seventeen states reported a decline in abortions from 2018, while 21 states reported that abortions increased. One state, Wyoming, published its first abortion report for the latter half of 2019.

Rest in Eternal Light: Sister Paula Vandegaer

“Greater love hath no man than this,” says John 15:13, “that a man lay down his life for his friends.” As with the parable of the Good Samaritan, so often that great love is lain down for those who are strangers – one’s “not yet” friends. So it was with the Sister Paula Vandegaer, a pioneering nun devoted to the sanctity of every life and to walking alongside women considering abortion. Sister Paula passed away in Los Angeles, California, on August 13 at age 82.

In the Corridor of Conscience: A Doctor’s Story

In a couple of rooms there were several scheduled C-sections; across the hall in another room there were several “D and E's.”  “D and E”, I learned that day, stands for “dilation and extraction”, a second trimester or later abortion where the baby is dismembered in the uterus and removed in pieces. Those lucky enough to be on one side of the hall went home in car seats. Those across the hall left in red biohazard bags.
