Momentum for Late-Term Abortion Limits

In the last three years, an increasing number of states have debated and/or passed statutes limiting abortions beyond a certain point in pregnancy.  Most recently, Texas legislators voted to ban abortions after five months of pregnancy and to increase the health and safety regulation of the state’s abortion clinics.  On July 18, 2013, Governor Rick Perry signed the bill restricting abortions after 20 weeks, despite a failed filibuster and a mob takeover of the statehouse.

Human Arithmetic: Valuing Lives

A report emerged recently that at least 148 female inmates in the California penal system had been sterilized without authorization.  The outcry justifiably focused on the fact that some women did not give informed consent, that it was against the law without prior authorization, and that in some cases it appeared there had been coercion.  But the underlying travesty is why the medical professionals thought it was okay: it would save the taxpayers money.

More States Move to Restrict Late-Term Abortions

Amid the firestorm in Texas politics on the legislative vote to ban abortions after 20 weeks and increase regulation of the health and safety of clinics that perform abortions (despite a failed filibuster, a successful mob takeover of the statehouse, and now a special session of the legislature), national attention has turned to these laws that create a time barrier on late-term abortions.

What Wendy Stands For

The Texas legislature tried to pass SB5, which would have limited abortion and regulated abortion clinics.  Senator Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) filibustered, as it was the last day of the session.  I followed by proxy the events through Facebook.  I had pro-life friends at the senate, and pro-choice friends livestreaming it long into the night.  Depending on the side, it was filibuster by mob or a devious bill and trampling parliamentary procedure (including allegations of time-stamp changing).  By the end of the night, the result was in: the vote in favor of passing the bill didn’t count, because the legislative session had ended two minutes before.

Irish Parliament Considers Pivotal Abortion Bill This Week

This week in Ireland, the final vote on proposed abortion legislation is expected to take place.  The Dáil is expected to hear and discuss proposed amendments to the divisive bill, though Taoiseach Enda Kenny has made it clear that one of the most contentious portions of the bill -- legalized abortion on the grounds of suicidality -- will not be removed from the proposed legislation.

Webinar Discusses Relationship between Abortion and Pre-Term Birth

In a fascinating new webinar sponsored by Heartbeat International and the Charlotte Lozier Institute, CLI adjunct scholar Dr. Elizabeth Johnson gave a fascinating presentation on induced abortion and the subsequent risk of pre-term birth.  In her talk, Dr. Johnson describes the serious public health concerns of pre-term birth and discusses the growing body of research on the topics as it relates to both clinical practice and a woman’s informed consent.
