MYTH

Late-term abortions don’t occur in the United States.

FACT

Several abortion centers offer elective abortions in the 8th and 9th month of pregnancy – 2022 abortion data from the states and the CDC indicate that approximately 6% of all reported abortions take place at or after 15 weeks of gestation. When applied to the Guttmacher Institute’s most recent estimate of 1,032,150 abortions nationwide in 2023, this is approximately 61,900 abortions at 15 weeks or later each year. Learn More

MYTH

Late-term abortions only happen for emergencies.

FACT

Media coverage of third trimester abortion often focuses on abortions performed because the unborn baby has a very serious health condition. However, research shows that many third trimester abortions are performed for the same reasons as abortions earlier in pregnancy. Learn More
