Open Letter to the Hawaii Legislature On Assisted Suicide

Friends in Hawaii have asked me to comment on the pending bill HB 2739, titled the “Our Care, Our Choice Act.”  For three decades I analyzed proposals of this kind for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C. Though retired from that position, I continue to do research and writing on this issue as an Associate Scholar at the Charlotte Lozier Institute and as a Public Policy Fellow at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Ethics and Culture.

‘Living Wills’ Should Foster a Patient’s Will to Live

In late 2017 Italy’s Senate approved, in a 180-71 vote, legislation permitting patient-created Advance Directives. The law endorses a form of Advance Directives so permissive that Italians won’t simply be able to outline their health care wishes prior to possible incapacity, but in fact will be able to hasten their own deaths.

New Report Confirms: Human Rights Abuses Continue Under China’s Two-Child Policy

"A third baby is not allowed so we are renting a home away from our village. The local government carries out pregnancy examinations every three months. If we weren't in hiding, they would have forced us to have an abortion," a father of three in China told BBC reporter John Sudworth in a secret interview in 2016. Sudworth then asked him, “If they had come for your wife, to carry out this forced abortion, would it have been possible to resist? Could you have refused?” The father answered, “No we cannot resist. There would be many family planning officers to take us away. They would put us in a van, directly to the family planning office, for the abortion.”

Brad Mattes, President of Life Issues Institute, recently recorded a radio special on the dangers of human trafficking. He reports that there are currently over 27 million persons held in slavery worldwide. One out of every three children who run away from home will be approached by a human trafficker within 48 hours – and the average age of entry is between 12-14 for girls and 11-13 for boys.

Trends Show More Federal Funds Awarded to Non-Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Soon after then-President Clinton’s National Bioethics Advisory Committee (NBAC) in 1999 issued a report recommending federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research (hESCR) the subject of such funding became one of the nation’s most hotly contested public policy issues. It was the subject of President George W. Bush’s first nationally televised address, and in the ensuing years Congress held a steady stream of hearings on the topic, many of which featured Hollywood celebrities making the case for expansive federal funding of hESCR.

Dangerous Abortion Pills: Another Woman Drugged and Loses Child

In May of 2017, Brook Fiske made the trip from her home in Rochester, New York to Arlington, Virginia to visit Sikander Imran and discuss with him how they planned to raise their child that she was carrying. The two were medical professionals that had dated in Rochester, and Fiske was 17 weeks pregnant. Though Imran had urged her to terminate the pregnancy, she refused. Tragically, he would have his way. Fiske recently shared her story to local news.
