Senior Research AssociateTessa Cox is Senior Research Associate at Charlotte Lozier Institute, where her research focuses on abortion statistics at the state and national levels and the changing landscape of abortion policy, provision, and access in the United States.
Tessa has appeared on CBN News and EWTN News Nightly and has testified before Members of Congress on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Her work has been featured by National Review Online, Newsweek, The Gospel Coalition, Fox News, The Daily Signal, and many other national media outlets. She has contributed to peer-reviewed research on women’s experiences with chemical abortion and the impact of abortion on women enrolled in Medicaid.
Originally from Illinois, Tessa earned a BA in Communications from Thomas Edison State University. Prior to joining CLI, she got her start in pro-life research with the Family Research Council.

Fact Sheet: Reasons for Abortion
After the Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, states across the country have enacted laws that limit abortion. Frequently, these laws make exceptions for abortions for certain reasons, such as rape and incest, risk to the mother’s life or health, or a fetal abnormality. This fact sheet documents how common, or uncommon, these various reasons for abortion are.
Fact Sheet: Three Problems with the FDA’s Abortion Drugs Complications Data
The FDA’s abortion drugs complications data is woefully incomplete. From 2020-2022, the six states that report complications by type of procedure reported 1,004 total complications from drug-induced abortions. Meanwhile, the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System data reflects just 17 unduplicated abortion-related adverse events over this same period.

New York’s 2021 abortion statistics were published online by the New York Department of Health in December 2022, showing that abortions performed on New York residents slightly increased from 2020.
Abortion Reporting: New York City (2021)
New York City’s 2021 abortion statistics showed a very slight increase in the number of abortions occurring from 2020 to 2021, with 37,813 abortions reported in the city in 2021, a 0.77% increase from 2020.
Abortion Reporting: Connecticut (2022)
There were 11,121 abortions reported in Connecticut in 2022, up 10% from 2021.
Abortion Reporting: Mississippi (2022)
There were 2,286 abortions reported in Mississippi in 2022, down 40% from 2021.
Abortion Reporting: Nevada (2022)
In 2022, there were 11,957 abortions reported in Nevada, an increase of 37% from the previous year.
Abortion Reporting: Illinois (2022)
Abortions in Illinois increased in 2022 by 9% from 2021, with a total of 56,457 in 2022 and 51,797 in 2021.
Abortion Reporting: Wisconsin (2022)
Wisconsin’s 2022 abortion report was released in January 2024, showing that abortions decreased significantly from 2021.
Abortion Reporting: Oregon (2022)
A total of 8,672 abortions were reported in Oregon in 2022, an increase of 22% from 2021.
